Ancestral Hall of the Palace
The Rastatt Revolution comes full circle at the palace. The open rebellion began in the palace courtyard on 11th May. During the siege of Rastatt, the revolutionaries held a war council in the palace's ancestral hall. Ultimately, the fortress of Rastatt capitulated to the Prussian troops on 23rd July "at the mercy of the Prussian troops". The revolution had failed.
Subsequently, a military court martial was held in the ancestral hall of Rastatt Palace. Twenty-one death sentences were passed, nineteen of which were mercilessly carried out. Otto von Corvin, who was also sentenced to death, had a stroke of luck. He was later pardoned, but twenty-six other revolutionaries were sentenced to long prison terms.
At the end of October 1849, a regular Baden military court finally passed judgment on the revolutionaries. The last spark of the democratic movement had burnt out and the revolution had finally fizzled out.
